Ageing Well Positively and Your Wellbeing

For many, the thought of getting older can be a worrying and daunting process, but it doesn’t have to be.

As with many things in life, it’s always helpful to maintain a positive attitude as much as possible- our thoughts, beliefs, ideas and attitudes can have a significant impact on our physical and emotional wellbeing as we age.

Embrace positive thinking

Positive thoughts and emotions can make a real difference, even by following some of these simple steps:

  • Do some form of meditation or yoga
  • Spend time with people who uplift you and make you feel loved.
  • Look for the positives and joy in even the littlest things.
  • Immerse yourself in something that makes you feel good- listening to your favourite piece of music, watching your favourite film or tv show, or reading a book can all make a difference.

There are many benefits to positive thinking:

Some of the main benefits of embracing positive thinking are the following:

  • Stress reduction
  • Improved immunity
  • Lower risk of heart disease
  • Can help you to live longer

A recent study found that positive thinking can result in an 11–15% longer lifespan and a stronger likelihood of living to age 85 or older- although factors such as gender, income, depression, and health status were all taken into account.

Change your lifestyle

Following a simple, healthy lifestyle can definitely help to preserve your health and energy, and just a few lifestyle changes can add years to your life.

By making some simple changes to your lifestyle and embracing positive thoughts, you may really start to notice the benefits to your physical, mental, and emotional health.
