ABI Awareness Week 2021

Created by Headway (The Brain Injury Association), 17th-23rd May marks Action for Brain Injury Week, and this year’s campaign is ‘A life of Lockdown?’

A life of Lockdown will focus on social isolation after a brain injury – the effects of a brain injury can come with many problems including memory, processing information or speech.

A lot of brain injuries often fall under the umbrella of a hidden disability, which means that there can often be a lack of understanding. For the survivors of a brain injury, this can cause them to lack confidence and feel anxious when interacting with society.

Repeated lockdowns have left a number of people in society feeling anxious, isolated and lonely but as we start to get back to some form of normality people will start to feel differently. However, survivors of a brain injury may still continue to feel isolated in society because enough may not be known about their condition.

As part of Action Brain Injury Week, if you know someone with a brain injury then please do reach out to them – let them know that they’re not alone and that you’re reaching out to offer help and support.

The aim of this year’s campaign is to give a voice to survivors and their carers so that they can explain to their friends and families the challenges they face.

As well as hoping to raise awareness, the campaign also has tools to help people make a difference, including guides and top tips.
