What is Live-in care?

Live-in care offers a practical solution for families who need some extra support in caring for their loved ones. Making provisions for those who are unable to live by themselves can be difficult; live-in home care can provide a workable solution, helping your loved one to remain in the place they know best, with the support of an experienced carer.

In this article, we’ll look at how live-in care works in practice to help you decide whether it’s the right option for your family. To chat through your care needs, you can reach us on 0345 241 0198. Abicare offers a fully-managed service, with professional support available to you at all times. You can trust that the advice we deliver will be in your best interest.

What do live-in carers do?

Abicare’s live-in carers carry out a range of tasks – big and small. If there’s anything specific your loved one needs, we’ll be happy to accommodate them. Thanks to the flexibility of our service, our care at home service is designed around you, incorporating your loved one’s routines and preferences.

There are some things which all home carers do on a day-to-day basis, including:

Look after dietary requirements

Eating a healthy, balanced and nutrient-rich diet is proven to improve our wellbeing and can even delay the onset of some diseases. Getting enough nutrients into our bodies becomes more difficult as we age, making the need for a good diet even more important.

Our carers will develop meal plans with your family that are both nutritionally-balanced and based on the kinds of food your loved one already enjoys. We’ll do your food shopping, prepare your meals for you, and even clear away afterwards.

Deliver medical care

Your live-in carer is trained to deliver all types of medical care, from administering and recording prescription medication, to providing continence, ventilator or tracheostomy care. Any medical care which requires specialist clinical training will be factored into who we recommend for your live-in carer.

Offer companionship

Loneliness among the elderly is an all-too common problem. It’s estimated that in the UK 1.4 million people aged over 50 experience loneliness – and this can be as harmful to our health as smoking 15 cigarettes a day

Each and every one of our carers is chosen for their people-skills. We take the time to get to know the personality of your family so we can match you with the right carer. They’ll fit right in with the household, taking part in the things that your loved one likes to do – whether that’s a hobby, or just a simple chat.

Who is live-in care right for?

You know the needs of your loved ones better than anyone else. Only you can know if live-in care is the right option for you, and we’re here to help you make that decision.

Abicare offers a completely flexible approach to care, which means our live-in care service is suitable for more people. We cater for all levels of care – for clients who are able to walk unaided and have no memory loss, to those with more complex needs. We also offer live-in care for our clients living with alzheimer’s and the different types of dementia

Although most of our enquiries are for live-in elderly care services, Abicare has expertise in every type of care, and can deliver a workable solution for every family everywhere in England and Wales.

When can live-in care be used?

Abicare offers live-in care for a minimum of three-days and our service is designed to fit in with your specific needs. Whether you need respite live-in care or  holiday cover spanning days, weeks or even months, we’re here to support you.

We’ll even accompany you on holidays and trips, if you need us to. In short, nothing is too much trouble, and care can be turned around in just 24 hours.

How does live-in care work?

Step one: Get in touch with Abicare.

Everything will seem easier after a chat with one of our live-in care professionals. We’re on hand to answer your questions, provide tailored advice or just a friendly ear for your concerns.

Step two: Create a budget.

Look into whether any funding is available to you. Your eligibility for funding will depend on lots of things, but you can find out more about this on our paying for care page. Abicare offers a flexible option to live-in care, which will help you to budget for your costs.

Step three: Help us to get to know you better.

Your next step will be to tell us a little bit about your family, and who the care will be for. We’ll need to know about their medical conditions and any medication that they take, as well as their likes and dislikes.

Step four: Choose your carer.

Once we’ve a good idea of your needs, we’ll introduce you (virtually) to some of the carers who we think will be a great fit for you. Read their profiles and experience and settle on who you think will be the best fit.

Step five: Let’s get to work.

Once you’ve agreed who you’d like your carer to be, they’ll pop over to meet you all. Together, we’ll devise a plan for how your live-in care will work in practice, and chat through any concerns that you may have.

With Abicare, there’s no long-term commitment. If you give it a go, and then decide that live-in care isn’t for you, you’re free to cancel – all we need is 1 weeks’ notice.
